Officer Biographies
Bryan Shields, Grand Master
Brother Shields pledged the Beta Phi chapter at UC Davis in
1982 as a Freshman. At the time, his pledge class – Eta – was
the largest class the chapter had ever pledged with 14 members.
After graduating from UC Davis, Brother Shields attended graduate
school in New York City at Columbia University where he received
a Masters in Business Administration in 1989. After business
school, he continued to live and work in NY at Time Warner Inc.
for a number of years. In 1993, Brother Shields moved back to
Davis and took a job working with another fraternity brother,
Curt Rocca, at a dental supply distribution company that Curt
had started up. Brother Shields has lived in Davis ever since.
Brother Shields joined the Kappa Sigma Alumni Chapter of Northern
California in 2000 and has been the GM since 2002.
Cyril Juanitas, Grand Procurator
Brother Juanitas lives in Davis, CA, with his wife and children
(three sons and a daughter). He is a Director with The Active
Network, Inc., and is responsible for strategic business
development and enterprise sales, with a primary focus on
working with the
largest cities, counties, and governmental authorities in
North America. Prior to moving to California in 1999, Brother
Juanitas
and his family lived in Seattle, WA, for over a decade. During
that time, he served in the administration of Seattle Mayor
Norman B. Rice, and held a number of executive level municipal
positions,
including Deputy Chief of Staff to the Mayor. Prior to joining
the City of Seattle, Brother Juanitas had been an attorney
with two Seattle-based law firms, practicing in the areas
of corporate,
securities, and technology law.
In addition to his service to the Kappa Sigma Fraternity
as an officer with the Kappa Sigma Alumni Chapter of Northern
California,
Brother Juanitas has a long history of civic and community
involvement,. He currently serves as a Commissioner on the
City of Davis Recreation
and Park Commission, and as a Liaison Commissioner to the
City’s
Finance and Budget Commission. While living in Seattle, WA,
he served on a number of commissions and non-profit boards,
including:
The St. Joseph School Commission, the Asian Bar Association
of Washington, The Leadership Tomorrow Alumni Governing Committee,
The Tribes Project (Youth Theater Group), Small Faces Child
Development
Center, and Filipino Youth Activities Organization. .
Brother Juanitas holds a bachelor’s degree in English
Literature from the University of California, Davis, where
he was a UC Regents
Scholar. He pledged the Beta Phi chapter at UC Davis in 1980
as a freshman, and served the chapter as Grand Master, Grand
Treasurer, and Grand Master of Ceremonies. A graduate of the
Georgetown University Law Center (Juris Doctor), Brother Juanitas
served on the editorial board of the American Criminal Law
Review. In addition, he attended Harvard University's J.F.
Kennedy School
of Government Program for Senior Executives.
John Christopher, Grand Treasurer
Brother Christopher has lived in the Sacramento area since
he was 5. He worked for Xerox in a variety of management
assignments, including District controller & Customer Service Operations
Manager, for 37 years before retiring in 2006. He lives in
Davis with Mary, his wife of 38 years.
Brother Christopher pledged the Beta Phi chapter in September
of 1965 & was initiated in January 1966. He was active in
chapter operations, serving as Grand Treasurer & Grand
Master. The Northern California District named him outstanding
active
chapter member in his senior year. He was also active in student
government, elected to the Student Assembly as a Representative
At Large in 1967. He graduated form UC Davis in 1968 with a
B.A. in History.
Brother Christopher has been active in alumni activities
since the chapter was reestablished more than 25 years
ago. He has
served as Treasurer of the Alumni Association since its
reemergence as an active organization. He has also served
as Alumni Advisor
for many years when the chapter was able to reacquire a
chapter house in the early 1990s.
Brother Christopher has also been an active supporter of
UC Davis, serving on the Board of Directors of the Cal
Aggie Booster Club,
including 7 years as Treasurer.
Blair Shahbazain, Grand Master of Ceremonies
Brother Shahbazian is a partner with the Construction Law
Team of the law firm Murphy Austin Adams Schoenfeld in
Sacramento, California. He formerly was a partner of
Diepenbrock, Wulff,
Plant & Hannegan, LLP, with whom he started his legal
career in 1986. His practice focuses on general civil
litigation with
emphasis in construction law, public contract procurement
including bid protests, and real estate litigation, including
lease disputes.
His representation of clients includes suppliers of goods
and services to public entities, general contractors
and subcontractors,
public entities, property management companies, and public
and private property owners.
Brother Shahbazian graduated from the University of California,
Davis with a B.A. in Political Science (1982) and earned
his J.D. from Hastings College of the Law (1986).
Brother Shahbazian has been involved in a number of community
organizations including the Lions Club International,
Fort Sutter Chapter; Board of Directors, ALS Association
of
Greater Sacramento;
and Board of Directors, Pocket Little League. He lives
in Sacramento with his wife, daughter and son.
Bob Cooper, Grand Scribe
Robert (Bob) Cooper lives in Placerville, CA with his
wife and teenage son. He retired in 1998 from the State
of California
after nearly 25 years of service. At the time of retirement
he
was a Hearing Officer with the Department of Social Services,
Disability and Adult Programs Division. From 1974 until
retirement he was also a disability examiner, quality
assurance analyst,
unit manager, and training coordinator for the government
division that processes Social Security disability claims.
Brother Cooper attended Grinnell College in Iowa prior
to transferring to the University of California, Davis.
He pledged
the Beta Phi
Chapter of Kappa Sigma in the fall of 1967 and was initiated
in December, 1967. As an undergraduate, Brother Cooper
served as Grand Treasurer of the Chapter. Following graduation
from
U.C. Davis in 1970, Brother Cooper attended University
of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law. However, his legal
education
was interrupted in 1972 by an accident that left him
partially paralyzed. Brother Cooper has been active in
the Kappa
Sigma (Beta Phi) Alumni Association Board of Directors,
in its
various
forms, for the last 25 plus years.
In retirement Brother Cooper enjoys woodworking and the
restoration of 1960’s era Chevy muscle cars. He
also enjoys gourmet cooking and wine tasting at several
local wineries in El Dorado
County.
